"On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree..." I love this song, and this is the first illustration paying homage to that, along with my love and fascination with birds.
The original sketch was made using ink and highly saturated watercolor on paper. My goal is to one day, have created an illustration for each of the birds listed in this 12 days of Christmas song.
Why do I love birds so much?
MEET THE ARTIST: Birds. I am fascinated with birds. Sometimes I wish I could be one! With all the colorful plumage, and gravity defying things they can do, I find myself a bit envious.
Many people from my family have a deep interest in birds, my dad, especially. I grew up with him sharing that interest with me and my brothers, teaching us all that is involved with his passion for homing pigeons. My uncle George loves birds too, only his love was for canaries, I believe. My brother, now a veterinarian, used to love to rescue mourning doves and care for them.
I myself, just like to observe them in nature, and sketch or take pictures and videos of them. Or, imagine them as actors in a soap opera, and act out scenes while my boys and I are watching them in public places while we are on vacation..."Pigeons at the Pier" it could be the greatest soap opera of all time. Look out Days of Our Lives!
While I have never seen a real Partridge in a pear tree, I have always loved the song that it's featured in.
Inspired by the Christmas song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" this illustration was created in December of 2021.
Pictured: The original painting, a mockup of a framed 8x10 print, and a pic I just took here in my little light box in my studio of the small offcentered original with an 8x10 print behind it. P.S....it's also available as a pillow or a tote bag.
