I will never forget the first time picking peonies at my grandma's house. I thought they were so pretty! So much so, that I wanted to wear them! So I tucked one stem behind my ear, only to realize that that was a bad idea! Those ants!
Despite those ants, I still love them, and as a former cut flower grower, my favorite stage to observe them is the marshmallow stage. It's the time right before they open, when they feel soft and squishy, just like a marshmallow! If you are able to harvest them at that stage, you can keep the cut flowers in a cooler in water for up to 3 weeks!
Peonies were always the first blooms we could sell during our seven year adventure as cut flower growers, and our clients would be starving for fresh flowers at the first farmers market of the year. They would be gone in an hour!
So, I guess you could say, that this painting pays homage to those first experiences I had as a child, growing up in Iowa, and my professional life as a cut flower grower/florist. Those experiences shaped who I am today, and influence the art I create!
