How to Make Your Own Dog Painting Using Hot Glue, Charcoal, and an Acrylic Pouring Technique

Materials Needed for Transferring an Image onto Your Painting Surface

Access to a Computer and Printer

Image editing Program: usually there is one that came with your computer, (just for getting the image cropped the and sized the way you want it to appear on your painting surface.)

Derwent Charcoal Pencil Set - Set of 4 : This is what you would use to trace over the outline of your dog prior to transferring it.  I would recommend working so that your hand is progressing backwards across the surface to prevent the charcoal from smudging

AdTech Drip-Less Mini Hot Glue Gun

Westcott ProjectMate Premium Hot Glue Pen I just saw this as an option that might provide more control when applying the glue. I personally, have not tried this product.

Materials Needed for Acrylic Pouring

1 part Distilled water

a few drops  Vallejo Silicone Oil Cell Medium - 35 ml Bottle:  This is the stuff you need to make the funky cells in your paint.  A little goes a long way, just a few drops and you get some amazing cell action.

2 parts Sargent Acrylic Pouring Medium - 32 oz bottle : This is the stuff you mix with the paint to make it "flow" across the surface of your panel.

1 part DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint - I have used this brand for years, and if you want multiple colors, and not huge quantities of each color, this is the low commitment way to go.

*** Blickrylic Gesso - Quart : You only need gesso if you plan to use a piece of lumber that you already have, or want to do your project on paper.  The gesso is used to coat the surface prior to doing the pouring and hot glue technique.  You should apply 2 coats to your paper or wood surface, front and back sides, allowing the gesso to dry between coats.

American Easel Gessoed Wood Painting Panel - 6" x 8", 7/8" Cradle A wood surface seems to work the best for acrylic pours, and helps to get the best cells in the paint.  These panels are pre-gessoed, so you can start your project right away.

Plastic Squeeze Bottle - 6 oz :  These are nice to have so that you can mix your acrylic paint, distilled water, pouring medium, and silicone oil in it, and have a cap for storing it if you don't use it all.  These types of bottles, also make it easier to control the amount of paint applied, and provide more directional control.
