Imitation is the Best Form of Flattery

hearts, hearts, and More Hearts

Marie Stephens

A few weeks ago, right before the derecho of 2020 hit Iowa, my husband asked my kids and I to come to Vander Veer Park, where he is the Horticulture Supervisor, to see the work he and his coworkers have been doing at this beloved and local jewel of a place.

It was a perfect night, and we spent time together, walking the grounds, and he taught us about some of the most interesting trees, and different ways to identify them.

I am so glad we went, because shortly after that night, Vander Veer was blasted with hurricane force winds, and many trees sustained extensive damage.  Fortunately, with the help of the parks and forestry departments, and several volunteers, the park was able to be cleaned up quickly.

My favorite one of the evening was the Golden Rain Tree.

Any tree that has hearts built into its design, will always be at the top of my favorites list.  I was so enamored with the colors, texture, and form of these beautiful seed pods, that naturally, I had to capture them in some way, so I can share them with you!

As an avid plant collector, this tree is on my list of trees to obtain.  I don't know where we will find room to plant one, but we will find a way!  Unfortunately, these trees are hard to find at nurseries, so we may just have to try starting one from seed.  No easy task.
