Something Really Awesome is Happening in Women's Basketball and Once Again, Sports are Inspiring My Art in 2024.

March madness, college Basketball History, Herstory, or  Theirstory? 
It's impossible to type the letters C, A, I without having the name, Caitlin Clark #22 be the first of my search engine results.....and for good reason!  This amazing young woman has broken a bajillion records in college basketball lately, including "Pistol Pete" Maravich's 50 year + record of 3667 career points!  


Caitlin Clark now holds the record for highest career points scored (man or woman) in NCAA basketball history.....or is it herstory???? Orrrrrrrrr.... 


or should it be coined "theirstory" because she didn't do it all alone. 

However you choose to label what is happening in college women's basketball, my art is being inspired by it as the story unfolds, and if you want to follow along in tiny snippets, as my mixed media painting evolves, you can in my stories on social media!

Why Create this Basketball Inspired Painting?

I Had So Many Reasons

"That fast pace and precision... that is just one of many things I admire about this basketball team. 

The mental and physical strength and endurance it takes for these players to perform, not only on the court, but in school, and as role models, is nothing short of amazing to me. 

The players remind me of the Bald Eagles I have spent hundreds of hours capturing on camera and in my sketchbooks over the years. 

Nature and good natured people...that's what inspires me, and the Iowa Women's Basketball Team combines both subjects so well. When I reminisce about Bald Eagles out in nature and how they behave in January and February here along the Mississippi River, I have realized that their movements and precision are much like the basketball players....only the eagles are fighting over fish instead of a ball!!" -Marie Stephens        

I feel like this painting will be a celebration of the way this team of empowered women are empowering other women, young and old, 

  • to realize their potential, 
  • to realize that there is room for all of us at the table of success, 
  • to realize that we can make a difference to others by sharing our light, our talent, and our passion about what inspires us.
