Value, Form, and Luminosity: A collection of Flower Paintings by Marie Stephens Art
Feb 20, 2020
The flower you see here is a Dogwood flower done with oils on a 36x36 inch canvas. I took a photo of the Dogwood tree at one of my favorite local parks, Vander Veer Botanical Park on May 6th, 2013, back when my littles were soooo little!
My youngest was only 2 and a half, and my soon to be 14 year old would have been around 7? My husband remembered that evening better than I did! He recalled how my oldest threw a fit because we had to take a picture of the Dogwood tree flowers, and all he could think about was playing on the playground. It was beginning to get dark, and he was afraid he wouldn't get to play.
Well, I got the shot, and my oldest still had enough time to play on the playground. Six years later, I finally got the chance to paint it!
But these Dogwood flowers! They are so delicate and only bloom for a short time! And if you don't get them when you have the chance, chances are that you will miss your window of opportunity! The wind might pick up, the rains could move in, and then poof...your perfect flower image is gone!
